Tataouine & Chenini: Full-Day Guided Tour

About This Experience

This is the Ksar Ouled Soltane version of the Tataouine day, and the distinction matters more than it sounds. Ouled Soltane is the four-storey granary courtyard whose stacked vaulted cells appear in The Phantom Menace — a genuinely startling building that photographs better than almost anything else in the south. The itinerary reaching it is different from the Ksar Hadada route sold by other operators on the same island.

You leave Djerba by the old Roman causeway, stop at Chahbania for salt-flat photographs, and reach Tataouine in time to spend free time in the market. The town's name is the reason the planet is called Tatooine.

Chenini gets roughly an hour with a guide from the village, who takes you through the oil mill, the mosque, the granary and the houses cut into the ridge. That hour is the part reviewers consistently single out, though a few note that the guiding is not always in strong English — the vehicle guide and the village guide are different people.

Lunch is a local meal and is included. The afternoon is Ksar Ouled Soltane, then an air-conditioned run back to Djerba.

Good to Know & Caveats

  • The listing names Ksar Ouled Soltane as its Star Wars stop, while the operator's own photographs are all of Ksar Hadada — the other Phantom Menace ksar, on a different road. If it matters which one you stand in, ask the operator to confirm before booking.
  • The guide who leads the Chenini walk is a villager, not your vehicle guide. Reviewers rate the site highly; a few say the English was thin on their day.
  • Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours ahead, and the listing offers reserve-now-pay-later.
  • The vehicle carries a small group rather than a coachload, which is why several reviews mention conversation with the other passengers.
  • Drinks at lunch are charged on the day.
  • The operator lists the day as unsuitable for travellers with mobility impairments — Chenini is built on a slope.

Not Suitable For

  • People with mobility impairments

Meeting Point

Hotel pickup on Djerba. The driver collects you from your accommodation in the morning; confirm the exact time with the operator after booking.

Great small-group tour with air-conditioned vehicle 😁. Stunning scenery, especially in Chenini, where we enjoyed a tour accompanied by a local guide. The meal was very good, with typical Tunisian dishes. Thank you to our guide, Mohammed, for all his explanations throughout the day, and to our driver, Nasser. I would 100% recommend this tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Star Wars site does this tour visit?

Ksar Ouled Soltane, where scenes for The Phantom Menace were shot, according to the listing's own itinerary. Worth one check before you book: every photograph in the operator's gallery is of Ksar Hadada, the other Phantom Menace ksar. Both are remarkable granaries and both carry the credit, but they are on different roads.

How long do you get at Chenini?

About an hour, with a local guide who covers the oil mill, the mosque, the granary and the cliff houses.

Is this a small group?

Yes — reviewers describe a small air-conditioned vehicle rather than a coach, and the operator sells it as a guided small-group day.

Is lunch included?

A midday meal of local food is included. Drinks are extra.

Can I cancel?

The listing carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time, with a full refund.
