Djerba &Zarzis: Sahara Ksar Ghilane, Matmata & Star Wars set

About This Experience

Saoud Voyages sells this one on rhythm rather than coverage: fewer stops, longer at each, and a route that avoids the busiest circuit. If the standard Djerba day trip sounds like too much windscreen time, this is the version built to answer that.

The main stop is Ksar Ghilane, the Sahara oasis at the edge of the dune sea, and you get extended free time there — the natural hot spring, the dunes, or simply sitting still. Quad hire and camel rides are available at the oasis and are paid separately; one recent reviewer put quads at around €30 per person.

Matmata follows, with its houses dug down into the earth rather than built up out of it, and the Sidi Driss site used in the Star Wars films. A local tea and honey tasting is folded into the day.

Be clear-eyed about the distance: this is a long drive. Reviewers who gave it five stars still describe a route of over 500 kilometres, and pickups before six in the morning. What they also describe, consistently, is a driver-guide who talks the whole way.

Highlights

  • Extended free time at the Ksar Ghilane oasis — hot spring, dunes, or nothing at all
  • Small-group 4x4 rather than a coach, on a route away from the main circuit
  • Matmata's cave homes, with the Sidi Driss Star Wars site
  • Traditional tea and honey tasting along the way
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off on Djerba or in Zarzis

Good to Know & Caveats

  • Roughly eight and a half hours of that day is spent on the ground in the south; the rest is the drive there and back.
  • Pickups are early — reviewers report 5:30 in the morning from Djerba hotels.
  • The total route runs well over 500 kilometres. Passengers who loved the day still describe it as a long one in the vehicle.
  • Quad and camel rides at Ksar Ghilane are extras. One 2026 reviewer quotes about €30 per person for a quad, €45 for two — treat that as indicative, not a quoted price.
  • The tour is built around fewer, longer stops. If you want to tick off Tataouine, Chenini and the ksour as well, this is the wrong itinerary.
  • Guiding is offered in several languages including French, German and Arabic as well as English.

Meeting Point

Hotel pickup on Djerba or in Zarzis, and drop-off at the same address. Reviewers report collections from around 5:30 in the morning.

What Travelers Say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The absolute highlight of our Djerba vacation! A great and incredibly varied one day trip to the south of Tunisia. We were picked up from our hotel right on time at 5:30 AM. The tour was superbly organized from start to finish. A very special thank you to our tour guide Salem. He was incredibly dedicated, personable, and accompanied us throughout the day with a lot of interesting information about Tunisia, the people, the landscape, and the history. You can tell that he does his job with real enthusiasm. Also a big thank you to our driver Hamsa. We felt safe and very well looked after at all times during the long journey. Our absolute highlight was Ksar Ghilane with the impressive Sahara landscape. We also did the quad bike tour there and rode through the dunes to the Roman fort of Tisavar – a fantastic experience and something we would definitely recommend! Matmata and the Star Wars set were also great.

We had a great day. The team was fantastic!!! and friendly. We visited MATMATA, went quad biking in the desert, visited an oasis, and had a traditional meal, all with the support of a professional and attentive team. A big thank you to our live guide Salem and our driver Faris.

An unforgettable day!!! A HUGE THANK YOU to Salem (our live guide) and Firas (our pilot 😂) who were great with us, highly professional, and unfailingly kind. Of all the things we did during our stay, this was the most amazing. Definitely not to be missed. Thanks again from the 4 of us.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from the standard Djerba desert day trip?

It deliberately does fewer stops and gives you longer at each — the bulk of the day goes to Ksar Ghilane rather than being split across the ksour. If you want breadth, book one of the Tataouine itineraries instead.

What time is pickup?

Early. Recent reviewers report being collected at about 5:30 in the morning from Djerba hotels, with a late-afternoon return.

Can I swim at Ksar Ghilane?

Yes. The oasis has a natural hot spring and the stop is scheduled long enough to use it. Bring swimwear and a towel.

How much is a quad ride at the oasis?

It is not included. A September 2026 reviewer was quoted about €30 per person, or €45 for two — prices are set on site and can change, so carry cash.

Which Star Wars location does it visit?

Sidi Driss in Matmata, the sunken courtyard that played the Lars homestead interior. Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are on the Tataouine routes, not this one.
