How a Djerba Departure Works

Four steps from this page to the courtyard of the Lars homestead.

  1. Decide Which Cluster You Want

Djerba reaches Matmata and Sidi Driss in one direction and the Tataouine ksour in the other. Few tours manage both in a day, and the best-reviewed of those is priced per vehicle, not per person.

  2. Check Which Entry Fees Are Included

Sidi Driss, Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane all charge admission. Some Djerba tours cover them, some do not, and that gap is worth more than the price difference between the tours.

  3. Give an Exact Pickup Address

Every departure here collects from your accommodation, anywhere on Djerba or in Zarzis. Give the hotel name and a map pin; several operators send the exact time by WhatsApp the evening before.

  4. Book with Free Cancellation

Most listings cancel free up to 24 hours ahead. Useful on a route where operators reshuffle the itinerary for weather and occasionally cancel outright.

The Four Main Djerba Departures Compared

Same island, same price bracket, different Tatooine. The entry-fee line is the one that separates them.

Choosing on the Island

Which Djerba Departure Actually Suits You

Ten tours, two directions, and one decision that settles most of it.

Djerba has the deepest bench of Star Wars day trips in Tunisia, and the reason is unglamorous: the island holds the package hotels, so that is where the coaches and the 4x4s are. Ten of the thirty-nine tours we track leave from Djerba or Zarzis, several of them cover the same four sites, and the prices cluster so tightly that the itinerary matters more than the fare.

The first thing to understand is that the island faces two different Tatooines.

West to Matmata, or south to Tataouine

Go west and you reach Matmata, where houses are dug down into the ground in courtyard pits and Hotel Sidi Driss still has the dining room that was the Lars homestead interior in 1977 and again in 2002. That direction usually pairs with Ksar Ghilane, a real Sahara oasis with a hot spring, a dune field and a Roman fort buried in sand.

Go south and you reach Tataouine, the town that gave the planet its name, and the ksour around it. Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are fortified granaries, honeycombs of vaulted cells stacked several storeys around a courtyard, and both stood in for the slave quarters in The Phantom Menace. That direction also picks up Chenini, a Berber village built into a cliff and still lived in, which is not a filming location and is the stop reviewers praise most.

Almost every tour on this page does one or the other. The single exception is the private eleven-hour run that manages both. It is priced per vehicle, not per person, and one guest chose it for exactly that reason — it saved them a second excursion.

What separates tours at the same price

Three of the shared day trips are priced within a dollar of each other, at $57, so compare the things that are not the fare.

Entry fees are the biggest one. Ksar Hadada, Ksar Ouled Soltane and Sidi Driss all charge admission. A $57 tour that includes entry is doing more for you than a $50 tour that does not, and the tours vary on this line more than on any other.

Then the length. The shortest Tataouine day is nine hours and the longest is twelve, at the same price. The nine-hour version gets there by trimming photo halts rather than sites, and it currently holds the highest rating of any Djerba departure at 4.9, though from only fifteen reviews.

Then which ksar. Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are different buildings with the same film credit, and you almost never get both on one shared itinerary. Ouled Soltane is the one most people photograph; Hadada is the one that reads more like a village.

Finally the seat. Reviewers who gave five stars still name the back row of the vehicle as the rough one on a twelve-hour day. If there is a chance to ask, ask.

The two costs nobody mentions

Drinks with the included lunch are extra on every Djerba tour here. That is the most frequent complaint in an otherwise glowing set of reviews, and it catches people out because the meal itself is free.

At Chenini, the guide who walks you through the village is a villager, not your tour guide, and at least one operator asks openly that you tip them directly. Carry small notes in dinars for both.

Our pick, and who should ignore it

The full-day jeep safari to Ksar Ghilane and Matmata is the most-booked Star Wars tour in the country, at 4.7 from 712 reviews, and it is the one we would send most people on. It includes lunch and Sidi Driss entry, it puts you in a hot spring in the middle of the Sahara, and at $69 it undercuts several tours that cover less.

Ignore it if the ksour are what you came for. It does not go to Tataouine, and no amount of desert makes up for that if Ksar Ouled Soltane is the picture in your head. The which tour is right for you guide runs that decision properly, and if you are still choosing your base, Djerba versus Tozeur is the one to read first.

"It was an incredible experience. I loved everything. I think the price charged is good considering what we do. Our driver Aymen is very good, always attentive and very concerned about our well-being. He was also very communicative, always explaining the Tunisian way of life along the way, and he described the points of interest we passed by. It was great. Thank you to him for the excellent day he provided. In short, I liked everything, especially the quad bike tour in the desert, which was great. Despite the kilometers traveled and the heat, this excursion is well worth it. I highly recommend it."
