Which Tunisia Star Wars Tour Is Right for You?
Nine tours, two clusters of filming locations and five hours of road between them. A straight comparison of what each departure covers, costs and leaves out.
There is no best Tunisia Star Wars tour, because the filming locations are not in one place. They sit in two clusters about five hours of driving apart, and which cluster you can reach is decided by the town you sleep in. Everything else — price, rating, group size — matters less than that.

Sleeping on Djerba, book the full-day jeep safari to Ksar Ghilane and Matmata. Sleeping in Tozeur, book the Chebika, Mides and Mos Espa circuit. Sleeping in Tunis, book two days with an overnight in the desert. Everything below is why, and where those answers break down.
First: which Tatooine do you actually want?
Two clusters, and no day trip covers both.
The eastern cluster is inland from Djerba. Hotel Sidi Driss at Matmata is the sunken courtyard that was the Lars homestead interior in A New Hope and again in Attack of the Clones, and it is still a working hotel. Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane, outside Tataouine, are fortified granaries — real ones, centuries older than the films — that stood in for the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace.
The western cluster is beyond Tozeur. Mos Espa itself, standing in the open desert by the Ong Jmal rock, with the Chott el Djerid salt flat nearby. This is the one people picture.
If the image in your head is the street of domes, you need Tozeur. If it is Luke’s kitchen or the honeycomb granary courtyard, you need Djerba. Trying to do both in one day is how people end up spending fourteen hours in a vehicle.
Second: what your base allows
From Djerba or Zarzis you get the widest choice — ten of the tours we track — at the lowest prices, typically $47 to $69 for a full day with lunch. Our pick is the jeep safari to Ksar Ghilane and Matmata: 712 reviews at 4.7, lunch and Sidi Driss entry included, and a hot spring in the middle of the Sahara on the way. If you want the ksour instead, the Tataouine and Ksar Hadada day trip is $57 with the entry fee covered.
From Tozeur or Nefta the vehicles are mostly private and the prices are higher. The full-day circuit through Chebika, Tamerza and Mides before Ong Jmal and Mos Espa is the highest-rated tour here that anyone has reviewed in numbers, at a clean 5.0 from 80 reviews, and it gives you thirty minutes inside the set. If money is the constraint, the four-hour afternoon 4WD run reaches the same set for $50 — with caveats we set out below.
From Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse nothing is close. The workable option is a two-day private trip that adds El Jem and Kairouan to the route and puts you in a desert camp overnight.
Third: the lines worth comparing
Entry fees. Sidi Driss, Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane all charge admission, and tours differ on whether that is covered. A $57 tour with the entry included can be cheaper in practice than a $50 tour without. This is the biggest hidden variable on the whole circuit.
Lunch, and drinks. Most Djerba itineraries include a meal. Almost none include drinks with it, and that is the single most common complaint in otherwise five-star reviews. Tozeur itineraries generally exclude food entirely, and one contradicts itself on the point — its summary advertises lunch while its inclusions list excludes it.
Group or vehicle. Tozeur operators sell private 4x4s; Djerba operators mostly fill a shared vehicle. The private premium buys pace, which is what the five-star reviews of those tours actually talk about — nobody rushed us, we stayed for sunset, the driver took a detour.
Per person or per group. One Djerba tour is priced per vehicle, not per person, covering up to two people. At $255 that reads expensive until you notice it is the best-reviewed of the few itineraries covering Matmata and Tataouine in the same day, and that it works out near the cost of two shared seats.
Fourth: the tours to think twice about
The cheap Tozeur run deserves an honest paragraph. It is $50, it drives a section of the old Paris–Dakar rally track, and its five-star reviews are genuinely enthusiastic. But only transport is included, and two guests have written that the advertised four hours ran closer to two on their day, with one calling the value poor. Both accounts are real. Book it if you want the set cheaply and you agree the finishing time at pickup; do not book it expecting a day out.
The two-day tour from Tunis is a coherent itinerary with a private vehicle, but it carries only a handful of reviews so far and excludes lunch on both days. That is a lot of money and time to commit on a thin sample. Ask the operator directly about meals and the camp before you book.
If you only have one day and you are flexible about where you sleep
Go to Tozeur. Mos Espa is the one location that is genuinely unlike anything else, the oasis circuit around it is worth the day on its own merits, and the ratings out of Tozeur are the strongest in the catalogue. The ksour are wonderful buildings, but they are wonderful buildings you can see photographs of; walking down the street of a spaceport that nobody maintains is stranger than that.
