Djerba vs Tozeur for the Star Wars Sites

What each base actually reaches

Djerba and Zarzis reach the eastern cluster: Hotel Sidi Driss at Matmata, which is the Lars homestead interior, and the fortified granaries at Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane, which played the Mos Espa slave quarters. Add Chenini, the inhabited Berber cliff village, and Ksar Ghilane, a genuine Sahara oasis with a hot spring.

Tozeur and Nefta reach the western cluster: Mos Espa itself, the Ong Jmal viewpoint above it, the Chott el Djerid salt flat, and the Sidi Bouhlel canyon. Add the mountain oases at Chebika, Tamerza and Mides.

Between them: about five hours of driving. One private eleven-hour tour from Djerba manages to cover both Matmata and Tataouine in a day, but nothing at all reaches Mos Espa from the island and returns.

The case for Djerba

Choice and price. Ten of the thirty-nine tours we track leave from Djerba or Zarzis, and the competition has pushed full-day prices down to $47 to $69 including lunch. You can pick a tour on itinerary rather than on availability.

The island also has the flights and the hotels. If you are on a package holiday you are probably already here, and no internal travel is required.

And the ksour are underrated. Ksar Ouled Soltane in particular is a genuinely extraordinary building — four storeys of vaulted granary cells stacked around a courtyard — that stood in for a film set because it already looked like one. Chenini, which has no film credit at all, draws the warmest reviews of anything on the eastern circuit.

The case for Tozeur

Mos Espa. It is the only purpose-built set in the country, it is the image everyone has in their head, and it is unreachable from anywhere else. If that is why you came to Tunisia, the argument ends here.

Beyond that, the ratings out of Tozeur are stronger. The full-day circuit through the oases and the film sites is the highest-rated tour here with real review volume behind it, 5.0 from 80 reviews, and the reason is structural: Tozeur operators sell private 4x4s rather than filling shared vehicles, so the pace is yours. Read those reviews and they are almost all about not being rushed.

The oases are also a better day out than the desert alone. Chebika, Tamerza and Mides are springs and canyons twenty minutes from a landscape with nothing in it, and guests routinely rate them above the film set.

What you pay for the difference

Djerba: roughly $47 to $69 per person for a full shared day with lunch.

Tozeur: $128 per person for the full private circuit, or $50 for a four-hour afternoon run that includes transport and nothing else. Private Mos Espa tours run from about $100.

So Tozeur costs roughly double per person for a full day, and the gap widens with group size because the private vehicles are priced per seat here rather than per car.

Getting between them

Tozeur has an airport with domestic connections, and the drive from Djerba is a long day. If you want both clusters, the sane plan is two nights on Djerba and one or two in Tozeur, with one day trip from each. That covers almost every location on the map for well under the price of a private multi-day tour, at the cost of an internal journey and some planning.

If you only get one

Tozeur, if you are a Star Wars traveller. Mos Espa is unlike anything else, the oases justify the day on their own, and the operators are better rated.

Djerba, if you are on a beach holiday with a Star Wars afternoon in it. The choice is wider, the price is lower, the sites are real buildings rather than a decaying set, and nothing needs rearranging around it.
