The Best Time for a Tunisia Star Wars Tour

Tozeur hits 40°C in July and the desert nights are cold in winter. Month by month, when to take a Tatooine day trip and what the heat actually does to the itinerary.

March to May, and late September to November. If you want the short answer, that is it, and the reason is not subtle: in July and August the maximum temperature in Tozeur averages around 40°C, and a Star Wars day trip is a twelve-hour itinerary with several stops that have no shade at all.

The best months, in one line

April, May, October and early November. June and September are workable at their edges. July and August are the ones to avoid, and December to February are fine by day and cold at night.

What the heat actually does to a tour day

Nothing about these itineraries is air-conditioned except the vehicle. Mos Espa is an open plain with no shelter. Ong Jmal is a rock you climb. Ksar Ouled Soltane is a courtyard. Chenini is a thirty-to-forty-minute uphill walk on bare stone.

In summer the operators respond by moving the schedule, not by shortening it. Pickups get earlier, the middle of the day goes to driving or to lunch, and the film sites land at the ends of the day. That works, but it means the picture you came for is taken in hard light at eight in the morning or thin light at seven in the evening, and the hours between are spent in a vehicle.

On the hottest July days Tozeur has reached the mid-forties. That is not weather to walk a film set in.

Month by month

March to May. The best window overall. Daytime temperatures in the south are comfortable for walking, the light is long, and after winter rain the Chott el Djerid sometimes holds a thin sheet of water that mirrors the sky. April and May are also when the mountain oases at Chebika and Tamerza look their best, because the springs are still running strongly.

June. Hot but not yet punishing. The first half is usually manageable; by late June the Tozeur afternoons are getting difficult.

July and August. Avoid if you have any flexibility. Tozeur averages around 40°C for the daily maximum in both months and July is the only month of the year when it reliably does not rain at all. Matmata, higher and inland, is a few degrees cooler but still into the high thirties. Tours run, and people enjoy them, but the day becomes an endurance exercise and the Ksar Ghilane hot spring stops sounding appealing.

September. The first half is still summer. The second half is one of the best fortnights of the year: the heat breaks, the crowds thin, and the light lengthens.

October and November. Excellent. Warm days, cool evenings, and the clearest air of the year for photographs. October is our pick if you want one month.

December to February. Cool and clear, with genuinely cold nights. Daytime walking is pleasant. The catch is anything with a desert camp — nights on the dunes drop close to freezing, and first-time visitors consistently underpack for it. The oases also run colder and greyer than the photographs suggest.

If you are going in summer anyway

Take the earliest departure offered, not the convenient one. Several Djerba operators collect from 5:30 in the morning and that is an advantage in July, not an imposition.

Prefer an itinerary with a water stop. The Ksar Ghilane runs include a natural hot spring, and the mountain-oasis circuits from Tozeur include shaded paths beside running water at Chebika. Both are meaningfully better summer days than a pure ksour itinerary.

Carry far more water than you think, and cover your head. There is nothing to buy at Mos Espa.

Consider the afternoon Tozeur run rather than a full day. It is built to end at sunset, which in July is the only tolerable time to be standing on that plain.

When to book, as opposed to when to go

Most listings here carry free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and several let you reserve now and pay later. That makes booking early cheap in risk terms, and worth doing for spring and autumn dates, when the best-rated operators fill up.

One weather note that is not about comfort: operators reshuffle these itineraries for conditions and occasionally cancel outright. At least one states plainly that a full refund applies when it does. Sandstorms in spring are the usual cause.

The short version

If you can choose, go in April, May, October or early November. If you are already in Tunisia in high summer, go anyway, take the earliest pickup, and pick a tour with water in it. The tour comparison guide covers which itineraries those are, and what a tour day is like sets out the practicalities in full.

Stand Where Tatooine Was Filmed

Mos Espa, Sidi Driss and Ksar Hadada are still out there in the sand — and a 4x4 day trip from Djerba, Tozeur or Tunis is the only practical way to reach them. Compare the options and book with free cancellation.
